Editorial Values
NOUS Review looks for writing that is curious, careful, and clear.
"We do not read to find perfection.
We read to find a mind that takes a genuine question seriously."
Every manuscript we publish is guided by a small set of commitments. These are the values our student editors and referees use to read, evaluate, and improve the work that passes through the Review.
Intellectual Independence
Questions should begin in genuine curiosity, not in the desire to satisfy expectations. We look for essays that pursue a problem the writer truly wants to understand.
Curiosity firstInterdisciplinary Thinking
The most compelling contributions frequently connect multiple domains of inquiry. Literary analysis may illuminate political questions; aesthetic theory may clarify social phenomena.
Across disciplinesEvidence
Claims should be grounded in texts, artworks, films, archives, cases, or other verifiable materials. A strong essay shows its reader where an argument comes from.
Show your sourcesArgumentative Rigor
A strong essay does not only state a view. It earns it through reasoning and interpretation — it anticipates objections and treats evidence seriously.
Earn the claimClarity
Complex ideas should be expressed with precision. Complexity should come from the subject, not from unnecessary obscurity. We value writing that is serious without being opaque.
Clear, never opaque
